Uthralikavu Pooram Festival 2010 in Kerala

Uthralikavu Pooram or Uthralikkavu Pooram is one of the important temple festivals celebrated in Central Kerala. Uthralikavu Pooram or Uthrali Kavu Pooram Festival is dedicated to the Goddess Kali and is held at the Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple in Vadakkancherry (Wadakkanchery), Thrissur, Kerala. This annual festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February – March). In 2010, Uthralikavu Pooram Festival is on 2nd March 2010, Tuesday. 

During the Uthralikkavu Pooram festival occasion, the temple is fully decorated with beautiful and traditional lamps. The major highlight of the festival is the colourful grand elephant processions during the day and night. Nicely decorated elephants, about 21 elephanths, line up to the rhythmic accompaniment of Panchavadyam (an ensemble of five musical instruments - Timila, Maddalam, Ilathalam, Idakka, and Kombu) and Pandimelam (or Pandi Melam is an orchestra consisting of Chenda, Ilathalam, Kuzhal and Kombu). The elephants parade around the Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple followed by devotees. On the concluding day, known as Poornam day, of the Uthralikavu Pooram festival, an all night elephant processions are held at the temple premises.
