Chithirai Masam in Tamil Calendar

Chithirai Masam or Chitirai month is the first Tamil month according to Tamil Panchangam followed by people of Tamilnadu, India. Majority of Hindu Tamil communities observe Chithirai as the Puthangu or Tamil New Year. However, the present Tamil Nadu government had made Thai masam as the first month of Tamil calendar and Pongal as the Tamil New Year. 

Chithirai Pournami and Thirukkalyanam or Celestial Wedding Festival at Madurai Meenakshi Temple are the main festival and auspicious events in the Tamil month of Chithirai.

Chithirai Masam coincides with the Meda Masam in Malayalam calendar.
