Lord Shani Navagraha Planet Saturn

Lord Shani or planet Saturn is regarded as the Lord of Saturday by Hindus. Lord Shani is one of the Nine Navagrahs in Hindu Astrology. Shanidev was born to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and his wife Chhaya (Shadow goddess) and hence is also known as Chayyaputra. Sani is the elder brother of Yama, the Hindu God of death, and is renowned in Hindu scriptures as the most dreaded god. Shanaiscarya, Shani Bhagavan, Saneesvara, Shaneesvaran, and Shani Deva are the other names of Shani.

Appearance of Shani Dev

He is described as dark in color, wearing black clothes, holding a sword, arrows and two daggers. He is mounted on a black crow (sometimes represented on a vulture). He is known as the greatest teacher.

Lord Shani in Hindu Astrology

Though Shani is malicious, the well-placed Shani on the horoscope of a person indicates a strong career, healthy life and completely positive for that person. Saturn rotates around the Sun in about 30 years. Thus it passes through all the 12 rashis or moon signs in 30 years which means he spends on an average about two and half years in each moon sign. This is considered important in Hindu astrology and for horoscope predictions.
