History of Snake Worship  in Kerala

In Kerala, snake worshipping is carried out with great respect and value by supreme divine formalities. That is why the idols of Naga Raja and Naga Rani are kept in separate shrines in almost all major temples in Kerala. Independent temples for snakes are very rare in India. The traditional snake worshipping in Kerala was started as per the advice of Lord Parasurama. Once, the land of Kerala was full of snakes and people expressed their inability to live on this terrifying land. Thus Parasuraman presented the matter in front of Lord Shiva whose suggestion was to please Snake Vasuki, the king of snakes. Then Parasuram approached Vasuki and revealed that the inhabitants of Kerala would provide special dedication and offerings to Snakes and asked them to co-exist with the people there by not doing any harm to the living beings. This condition was gladly accepted by Vasuki and his associates, and they danced with ecstasy. Thus the place came to know by the name Pambadi which means, ‘the location where snakes danced’. After that, Pambadi Pambumekkavu became a significant snake worshipping center in Kerala.
