Sikkal Singaravelan Temple is a popular Murugan temple located near Nagapattinam, in Tamil Nadu. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva as Navaneetheswarar. However, primary importance is given to Lord Subrahmanya Swamy here. The temple is regarded as an unofficial 7th Padaiveedu of Muruga, along with the other Arupadaiveedu shrines (6 homes of Lord Muruga). Another uniqueness of Singaravelan Temple is that both Shiva and Vishnu (Venaipperuman) deities in the same temple complex.
The goddess of Singaravelavar Subrahmanya Temple is known as Velnedunganni. The temple has separate sannidhis for Pillayar, Maha Lakshmi, Bhairava, sixty three Nayanmars, Nataraja, Lord Surya and Lord Chandra. The sthala vriksha (sacred tree) here is jasmine. According to a popular belief, the place was once a beautiful jasmine forest and due to it pleasant smell Kamadenu used to live here. The temple features three holy tanks named Ksheera, Gaya and Lakshmi.
Temple Significance
It is said that Lord Muruga received his divine Vel from his mother Goddess Parvati at Sikkal. Murugan killed the demon Surapadman with Vel at Tiruchendur the next day. The Shiva Linga of the temple was made by Sage Vasishta with butter obtained from the milk of the divine cow Kamadhenu for worship. Sage Vasishta, Viswamitra Maharshi, Kamadenu and Suryavamsha Emperor King Muchukunda (son of King Mandhata) has done worship in this holy shrine.
Festivals
Soorasamharam is the most important festival celebrated in the temple. Skanda Sashti (in Aippasi month) and Chitrai Brahmotsavam are other festivals conducted with religious significance. On every m month Karthigai nakshatra special poojas are conducted on the temple.
