Chithirai Brahmotsavam Festival at Madurai Meenakshi Temple

Chithirai Brahmotsavam Festival or the Chithirai Festival is the 12 days annual festival celebrated at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple at Madurai or more popularly Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu. Chithirai Festival or Chitra Festival is celebrated every year on the Tamil month of Chithirai or Chitirai (April – May). In 2012, the Chithirai Brahmotsavam Festival starts on 23rd April 2012 and the festival will conclude on 3rd May 2012.

The major highlight of the Chithirai Brahmotsavam Festival is the “Meenakshi Thirukalyanam” or celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar on the tenth day of the festival. In 2012, the Meenakshi Thirukkalyanam is celebrated on 2nd May 2012.

3rd May 2012 - Thiru Ther Therottam or Theertha Festival or Theerthavari (Ratha Utsavam, Chariot, Car Festival)


One of the highlight of the Chithirai Festival is the procession of Lord 'Kallazhagar' or Lord Vishnu, the brother of Goddess Meenakshi, who proceeds from Azhagarmalai to Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to give away his sister in marriage to Lord Sundareshwar. The procession of Lord Kallazhagar on gleaming real-gold horse chariot starts from the Azhagar Hills, around 30 km from Madurai, to Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The 'Kallazhagar' entering the river Vaigai is a beautiful sight to witness.

Therottam or Car Festival is celebrated on the 11th day of the festival. The Chithirai Festival at Madurai Meenakshi Temple concludes on the 12th day, celebrating Theerthavari or Theertha Festival. On this day Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi takes procession on the four Masi streets in the morning and evening.
