Sharan Navaratri Festival 2009 at Sri Sharadhamba Temple, Sringeri, Karnataka

Dating back to the ancient times, this spectacular Nine day Utsava is a tribute to the traditions of Sharadha Peetam and its illustrious Acharyas.

Sharannavaratri or Sharan Navaratri at Sharadhamba Temple, Srungeri, Karnataka, is the most auspicious festival when the Supreme worshipped as Universal Mother is adorned in the form of MahaKali, MahaLakshami and MahaSarawathy. Sharan Navaratri Festival is celebrated with Grandeur by Jagatguru Shankaracharya in the Shukla Pakska of Ashwin Masa i.e from Mahalaya Amavasya to Vijaya Dashami.

In 2009, Navaratri Utsava begins on September 18 and ends on September 28 with Dashahara (Vijaya Dashami).

On the Mahalaya Amavasya (Sep 18th), Shardambha after the Maha Abhisheka is adorned with Jagat Prasutika Alankara, signifying her role as Universal Mother.

The commencement of utsava is marked by the Sri Sharadha Prathishtha on the day following the Amavasya.

From this day Devi is decorated on different Vahanas, identifying Goddess in several forms

  • Day 2 – Maheshwari (Bull) – 20 September 2009
  • Day 3 – Koumari (Peacock) – 21 September 2009
  • Day 4 – Vaishnavi (Garuda) – 22 September 2009
  • Day 5 – Indrani (Elephant) – 23 September 2009
  • Day 6 – Raja Rajeshwari– 24 September 2009
  • Day 7 – Gaja Lakshmi – 25 September 2009
  • Day 8 – Saraswathy (Veena Sharadha) – 26 September 2009
  • Day 9 – Durga – 27 September 2009
  • Day 10 – Kamadhenu – 28 September 2009
Special Poojas

On the Chaturdhi, an AstaDravya Homa is offered to Lord Ganapati. Starting from Pancahmi Saptashati Parayana is performed with Chandi Homa. Purnahuti takes place on Navami. Gaja Puja and Ayudha Puja are also done on Navami.

On, the Vijaya Dashami Pattabishekam Canto from the Raamayana is recited to mark the coronation of Sri Raama.

Varius Parayanams (Reciting) from Devi Bhagvata, Harivamsha, Lalitopakhyana, LakshmiNarayana Hridaya, Suta Samhita and Vedas are done during the Navaratri.
