Hampi Festival in Karnataka - Vijaya Utsav

Hampi Festival, also known as Hampi Utsav or Vijaya Utsav, is the annual festival celebrated at Hampi in Karnataka, India. Hampi is the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, and the festival of Hampi is a cultural event celebrated since the Vijayanagar rule. Hampi features lots of ruins of Vijayanagara Kingdom, and hence is currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hampi Vijaya Utsav is a three days event organized by the Government of Karnataka annually. The Hampi Vijaya festival is a dance and music festival which brings in the participation of the most distinguished people from the field of art, dance, music and drama. Fireworks, puppet shows and processions are the other attractions of the festival. In 2011, Hampi Festival 2011 is from 27th to 29 January 2011.

The Hampi town wears royal attire during the 3 days festival – the 2 km long pathway near the famous Virupakshapura Temple of Lord Shiva, earlier known as the Raja Marga, will be adorned as the Vijayanagara theme.

Renowned artists from all over India in the field of dance, music and art will perform during the 3 days festival which reminds the golden era of Vijayanagar Period. Tourist can also witness beautifully decorated elephants, horses, and men dressed in Vijayanagara era military uniform in various lanes of Hampi. Classical Indian dancers and carnatic vocalists will perform in different avenues. Other tourist attractions of the Hampi Festival include spectacular processions, fireworks, puppet shows, and traditional handicrafts mela.

How to reach Hampi

The nearest railway station to reach Hampi is Hospet Junction Railway Station. Hospet town is about 13 km away from Hampi. 

Hampi Bus Station is near the Hampi Bazaar, where one can obtain bus services to the major towns and cities in Karnataka.

Bellary Airport is the nearest airport to reach the historic Hampi city. The airport is around 75 km away.
