Varanad Devi Temple Festival

The annual Varanad Devi Temple Festival. The Thiruvulsavam (festival) usually lasts for 14 days during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February – March). Varanad Devi Temple is situated near Varanad Junction, around 3.5 km form Cherthala KSRTC Bus Station in Alappuzha, Kerala. The Goddess is worshipped here as Shatrusamhara Murthi (One who destroys the enemies), with Vetala as her vahana (vehicle).

Varanad Temple Festival 

On the next day after the Festival kodiyettam (flag hoisting), Goddess Varanad Devi will be visiting the devotees houses as procession. Devotees welcome the goddess with ‘Nirapara’ and ‘Thalapoli. Elephant procession along with “Panchari Melam” will be held on the 12th day evening. On the 13th day the Goddess completes her visits to houses and with grant elephant procession and Pandimelam, the Devi will be returned to the temple. Garudan Thookkam (Eagle Hanging) will be held on the 14th day of the festival and thousands of devotees throng to witness this ritual. Numerous cultural programs and temple arts will be performed on all days of the festival.
