Sreevaraham Mukkolakkal Bhagavathy Temple Trivandrum

Sreevaraham Mukkolakkal Bhagavathy Temple is a famous Devi temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. One of the renowned Goddess Temples in Kerala, Sri Varaham Mukkolackal Bhagavathi Temple is situated at Sreevaraham, on the south-east of Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple in Trivandrum. The temple is situated on the south of the famous Sreevaraham Lakshmi Varaha Temple. Mukkolakkal Bhagavathy Temple enshrines a Swayambhu (self originated) Panchaloha idol of Goddess Parvati – a manifestation of Goddess Shakti. The temple also has sub shrines dedicated to Lord Ganapathi, Nagaraja (the Serpent God), Brahma Rakshas, Thampuran and Yakshi Amma.

Legend of Mukkolakkal Temple

Legend has it that the Goddess Kannaki (Kannagi) of South Indian epic Silapathikaram, took rest at Mukkolakkal while traveling to her abode at Kodungallur after annihilating King Pandya of Madurapuri. Mukkolackal later emerged into a major religious place of worship.

Mukkolakkal Devi Temple Festivals

Ooroottu is the major festival celebrated at Mukkolakkal Bhagavathy Temple annually. Also known as Ooroottu Maholtsavam, the festival starts on the Thiruonam nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Meenam. Parakkezhunnallippu (Ezhunallippu or Royal Procession of the deity atop an elephant), Pongala, Kuthiyottam, traditional music and dance programs, and colourful fireworks held at the temple premises are major attractions of the Mukkolackal Temple festival.

Other major festivals celebrated in the temple include Aadi Chovva, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Navaratri and Vijayadashami, Mandala Chirappu, Ayilya Pooja, Sree Lalitha Sahasranama Kodiarchana (held once in 3 years) and Suvasini Pooja.

Mukkolakkal Temple Timings

Sreevaraham Mukkolakkal Bhagavathy Temple opens daily at 4.45 AM in the morning for Palliyunarthal ceremony and closes at 8.00 PM after Athazha Pooja and Deeparadhana. The morning worship timings are from 4.45 AM to 10.35 AM. And the evening worship timings are from 5.00 PM to 8.00 PM.

How to reach Sreevaraham Mukkolakkal Devi Temple

Mukkolakkal is a small locale situated near Sreevaraham, which is just 1.5 km away from Trivandrum City Bus Station. Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is the nearest railway station to reach the temple.
