According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Kali once appeared in the form of a young maiden known as Vaishno Devi. During this time, a powerful demon named Bhairav Nath pursued her. To escape, the Goddess shot an arrow into the earth, creating a cave where she took refuge. When Bhairav Nath eventually found her, a fierce battle ensued. Manifesting her divine form as Mahakali, the Goddess defeated the demon.

As Bhairav Nath lay dying, he sought forgiveness and mercy. Moved by his repentance, the Goddess granted him salvation (moksha) and blessed him with a boon. Since then, it has become a sacred custom for devotees to first worship Goddess Mahakali in the cave temple and then visit the Bhairav Nath shrine to complete their pilgrimage.

Today, Patal Bhairav Temple remains an important pilgrimage destination, offering devotees a blend of spiritual devotion, mythology, and cultural heritage.
