The Krishnadarsana Avatar is a lesser-known but fascinating legend that highlights Lord Krishna's compassion toward Shani Dev (Sanidev). The story explains how Shani received the divine vision (darshan) of Lord Krishna despite being feared by many.
Marriage of Surya and Sanjana
The Sun God Surya married Sanjana, the daughter of Visvakarman, the celestial architect. When Sanjana reached marriageable age, Visvakarman chose Surya as her husband, and their marriage was celebrated with great joy.
Although she loved her husband, Sanjana found it difficult to bear Surya's intense brilliance and scorching heat. Over time, the powerful radiance darkened her complexion, making it resemble the color of twilight. Because of this transformation, the gods began calling her Sandhya.
Sandhya Creates Her Shadow
Determined to perform severe penance, Sandhya created a shadow form of herself through her spiritual powers. This shadow was named Suvarna (Chaya). Before leaving, Sandhya entrusted her children to Suvarna, instructing her to care for them and keep her true identity a secret. She then departed for the forest to undertake intense austerities.
Birth of Shani Dev
Surya later had three children with Suvarna, one of whom was Shani Dev.
Suvarna was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. During her pregnancy, she remained absorbed in Shiva's worship and performed rigorous penance without seeking food or shelter, even under the blazing sun. The spiritual austerities she observed greatly influenced the unborn child, and Shani Dev was born with a dark complexion.
Shani Dev's Desire to See Krishna
When Lord Krishna was born in Nandavana, many gods, sages, and celestial beings came to receive the divine child's blessings. Shani Dev also wished to see the infant Krishna.
However, Mother Yashoda stopped him from entering. Fearing the powerful influence associated with Shani Dev, she said that his fierce appearance and fearful reputation might frighten her infant son.
Though saddened, Shani Dev accepted her decision without anger.
Lord Krishna Grants Divine Darshan
Heartbroken, Shani Dev went to a nearby forest and offered sincere prayers to Lord Krishna. Moved by his unwavering devotion, Krishna appeared before him and blessed him with His divine vision.
According to another popular tradition, Lord Krishna later assumed the form of a cuckoo bird and appeared before Shani Dev, fulfilling his longing for darshan. This sacred event became known as the Krishnadarsana Avatar, symbolizing that true devotion always receives the Lord's grace.
Another Traditional Version
Some traditions narrate that Maharshi Kashyapa's great Yajna (sacrificial ritual) played a significant role in the birth of Shani Dev. This version exists alongside the more widely known account involving Surya, Sandhya, and Suvarna.
