The Legend Behind Ucchi Pillayar Temple
The history of Ucchi Pillayar Temple is closely associated with the Hindu epic Ramayana and the origin of the famous Srirangam Temple.
According to legend, after the victory over Ravana, Lord Rama gifted the sacred idol of Lord Ranganatha to Vibhishana, the righteous king of Lanka. Vibhishana was instructed not to place the idol on the ground during his journey, as it would become permanently fixed wherever it touched the earth.
Lord Ganesha, disguised as a young boy, offered to hold the idol while Vibhishana attended to his daily rituals. After waiting for some time, Ganesha placed the idol on the banks of the River Kaveri, where it became permanently established. This site later became the sacred Srirangam Temple.
When Vibhishana realized what had happened, he chased the young boy. Ganesha then ran to the nearby rock hill and revealed his divine form at its summit. It is believed that this sacred spot became the present-day Ucchi Pillayar Temple.
