Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
In 2026, Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 8. On this auspicious occasion, homes, temples, streets and public places are illuminated with traditional oil lamps, colourful decorations and beautiful rangolis.
Diwali is celebrated to mark the victory of righteousness and the triumph of good over evil. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana after defeating Ravana and completing fourteen years of exile. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting rows of oil lamps.
The festival is also associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth, prosperity and abundance. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on Diwali to seek blessings for happiness, peace, success and prosperity.
Lakshmi Puja on Diwali
Lakshmi Puja is one of the most important rituals performed during Diwali. Devotees clean and decorate their homes, light traditional diyas, offer flowers, fruits and sweets, and perform special prayers to Goddess Lakshmi.
Lord Ganesha is also worshipped along with Goddess Lakshmi for wisdom, good fortune and the removal of obstacles.
