2009’s first Surya Grahan or Suryagrahan (Solar Eclipse) is on January 26th Monday (Amavasi Day) from Indian Standard Time 10:26 to 16:30 hours. The second partial Surya Grahanam is on July 22nd Wednesday.

January 26 Surya Grahan occurs on Makara Rasi (Capricorn) Thiruonam Nakshatra. Hence the ill effects of Surya Grahan is affected mainly on the 19 Nakshatras of the below mentioned rashis -

2) Kumbha rashi (Aquarius)
3) Medam rashi (Aries)
4) Edavam rashi or Vrishaba (Taurus)
5) Karkata or Karkadakam Rashi (Cancer)

7) Kanya or Kanni Rashi (Virgo)

All Hindu believers who falls in any of the 19 nakshatras mentioned above had to take fasting or abstain from any food for 12 hours before Surya grahan. For those who cannot stay away for 12 hours should at least don’t take any food for 4.5 hours before solar eclipse and chant Mahamrityunjay Mantra.
It is also better if you can perform Mahamrityunjay Homam at any nearby Lord Shiva Temples. Please note that almost all temples will be closed on Surya Grahan day, so one should perform the puja earlier to Surya Grahan. It is also better to perform any other pujas like Jala Dharan, Pushpanjali, Ayur Sooktham, Pinvilakku, or Bhagya Suktham.

Besides the 19 nakshatras mentioned above every one should wake up early in the morning, take bath and chant Mahamrityunjay Mantra or Shiva Panchakshara Stotra during the entire Surya Grahan period.
