Udiyanoor Devi Temple Pongala Festival

Udiyanoor Devi Temple is a famous Goddess Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, situated at Maruthankuzhy (Maruthankuzhi), around 8 km from Trivandrum city. The annual Meda Punartham Pongala festival at Udiyanoor Devi Temple is celebrated during April - May. 

Pongala is a major Hindu festival celebrated at Goddess temples in South India. Pongala is the offering of porridge made of rice, coconut gratings, jaggery and sweet brown molasses, cooked in earthern pots to the Goddess of the particular region. The pongala festival at Udiyanoor Devi Temple is celebrated for 10 days and the Pongala day falls on the Punartham Nakshatram in Malayalam calendar.

Udiyanoor Devi Temple Maruthankuzhy Pongala FestivalThe sanctum sanctorum of Udiyanoor Devi Temple faces north and the temple enshrines the idol of the supreme mother with four arms and a bright face with motherly affection. The unique feature of the idol of Udayanoor Devi is that the idol is a combination of both Saiva and Vaishnava features – with Trident and curved sword on the upper hands and chakra and conch on the two lower arms.
