Mahabaleshwar Temple - Gokarna is famous for Mahabaleshwar Temple, the most desired pilgrimage for Hindus to worship Lord Shiva. This temple houses Atmalinga believed to be taken from Lord Shiva's heart itself and given as boon to Ravana the demon king of Lanka. But he was tricked by the Lord Ganesha to place the Atmalinga here. This Temple has 1500 year old Shiva statue in standing posture carved in stone.

Bhadrakali Temple - The legend of Bhadrakali Temple is also linked to Ravana and the boon he received from Lord Shiva. Ravanan requested for beautiful wife, but for the Lord there was no one beautiful than his wife. So ordered Uma to go with Ravanan and then Lord Shiva requested for Lord Vishnu's help. Lord Vishnu disguised as an old Brahmin met Ravan at Gokarna and tricked him to abandon Uma. Then Mahavishnu asked Uma to settle down at Gokarna.

Mahaganapathi Temple is built in respect of Lord Ganesha, who deceived Ravana to place the Atma Linga at Gokarna.

Other important temples of Gokarna are Uma Maheswari temple, Tamra-Gauri temple, Varadaraja temple, Shanmuka temple and Venkataramana temple. Kotitheertha is a man-made tank to immerse idols and take ritual bathing.

Bhandakeri Math and Toggu Math are important centres for learning Sanskrit. The knowledge is passed down by the generations of Brahmin Families residing there.
