Famous Temples in Konark Orissa

There are numerous temples in Konark, a small town in Puri district of Orissa (Odisha). Situated around 65 km from Bhubaneswar, Konark is well known for being home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 13th century Konark Sun Temple. Other famous hindu pilgrimage destinations in Konark include Goddess Ramachandi Temple, Konark Vishnu Temple, Beleshwar Shiva Temple and Konark Matha Monastery.

Konark Sun Temple

The Sun Temple at Konark, Orissa is a World Heritage Site and is the third link in the Orissan Golden Triangle (the other 2 being Bhubaneswar and Puri). Konark Sun Temple is also known as the Black Pagoda. 

Goddess Ramachandi Temple Konark

The Temple of Goddess Ramachandi is located to the south west of the Konark Sun Temple. Goddess Ramchandi Temple is located on the banks of the Kusabhadra River and is just 5 km distance from Konark. Maa Ramachandi is believed to be the presiding deity of this ancient temple, while some people believe the deity is Mayadevi, the wife of Lord Surya (Sun god). The temple is now in a dilapidated state.

Lord Vishnu Temple Konark

Just behind the Ramchandi Temple is a broken brick temple of Lord Vishnu. On the sides of the temple walls people can see beautiful images of Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathi. There is a pillar in front of the temple which is said to be the seat of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

Konark Matha Monastery

Konark Matha is a monastery (Matha) which is located just near the compound wall of the Lord Surya Temple at Konark. There is no deity and only Nirakar Brahma (or empty space) is being worshiped in the Matha.

Beleshwar Shiva Temple

Beleshwar Shiva Temple is located on the Puri – Konark route and is around 15 km from Puri. The temple is one of the famous Shaivate pilgrimage sites in India.
