Pattadakal Temples in Karnataka UNESCO World Heritage Site in India

Pattadakal Temples are famous historical monuments located 22 km from Badami and 10 km from Aihole, in Karnataka state of India. It is believed that they were constructed during the reign of Chalukya dynasty in the 8th century AD. The river Malaprabha which flows through Pattadakallu or Pattadakal village adds tremendous glory to these ancient structures.

Architecture or Pattadakal Temples in Karnataka

The carvings and art works of the temples of Pattadakal belong to north Indian, south Indian and Indo-Aryan styles. In this group of nine temples four are constructed as per Dravidian designs, another four followed Nagara methods and the remaining one with a blend of the aforesaid two building trends. In the year 1987 these majestic devotional centers were included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

Pattadakal Group of Monuments

Among the Pattadakal temples, Virupaksha Temple with Dravidian Architecture is the largest. The Mallikarjuna Temple which resembles Virupaksha Temple in structural features and hence they are known as twin temples. The dome of the first is square in shape whereas that of the latter circular.

Visweswara Temple is constructed with dressed sandstone blocks while Sangameswara Temple draws attention with incomplete sculptural works.

Galanatha Temple which constructed in Nagara style is featured with four towers located in four corners. In Kadasidheswara Temple the shrine of the main deity is without roof.

Papantha Temple is constructed in North Indian style with sculptural images of Shiva, Parvathi and Gajalakshmi.

Another attraction is Jambulinga Temple with external horse shoe shaped projections.

There is also one Jain Temple at Pattadakal which constructed in Dravidian style. This is famous for excellent carvings and traditional art works.

Every year in January a striking Dance Festival known as Pattadakal Dance Festival or Chalukya Utsava 
is conducted at Pattadakal Temple premises which attract tourists from all over the world.
