Kaliyadalan Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrab month (Bhadrapad). The Ekadasi is also known as Kaliyadaman Ekadasi. The vrat, celebrated mainly in Orissa, is associated in memory of the story of Kaliya Daman by Lord Krishna as mentioned in Bhagavata Purana. This year Kalia Dalana Ekadasi falls on 10 September 2023.
Kaliyadalan Ekadashi is celebrated as Annada Ekadasi or Aja Ekadasi in other parts of India. Story is that it is on this day Lord Krishna overcomed the Kaliya Naag and saved Yamuna river and the animals, birds and people living nearby. Kaliya Dalan Ekadasi vrat is conducted to commerate this divine event.
Lord Shri Jagannath at Puri Jagannath Temple in Orissa will be dressed in Kaliya Dalan Vesha (The Dancing on Kaliya Demon Attire) on this day.
