Kanaka Durga Temple Vijayawada

Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada is a famous Goddess Durga temple located on the Indrakeeladri Hill in Andhra Pradesh, India. This ancient temple which lies on the left banks of Krishna River has been mentioned in various Hindu scriptures such as Kaalika Purana and Durga Sapthashati. According to sacred texts, the presiding deities of the temple, Goddess Kanaka Durga and Her consort Malleswara are Swayambhu in Triteeya Kalpa. The temple is also known by the name Sri Durga Malleswara Swami Temple. 

Kanaka Durga Temple was constructed by Arjuna of Pandava brothers. This is the place where Lord Shiva bestowed Arjuna with the Pasupatha Astra after getting pleased with his penance. The Sri Chakra at the feet of the Goddess was installed by Guru Adi Shankaracharya (Sri Sri Sri Sankara Bhagavatpadulu) in the 8th century. Inscriptions from various dynasties are found in the temple. The famous Chinese pilgrim and scholar Hiuen Tsang had visited the temple.

Temple Deities

Goddess Kanaka Durgamma is the Devi of power, riches and goodwill. The temple enshrines a four foot high idol of the goddess adorned with glittering ornaments. The goddess is shown with 8 hands carrying various weapons, and standing posture over the demon Mahishashura. The shrine of Malleswara Swamy is adjacent to the goddess temple. Inside the main temple premises there are separate shrines for Lord Sri Malleswara Swamyvaru, Sri Nataraja Swami, and Sri Subrahmanyeswara Swami.

Temple Timings

Kanaka Durga Temple is open from 4 AM to 9 PM on all the days, except Thursdays. The temple timings on Thursdays are from 4 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 9 PM.

Festivals 

Navaratri and Dasara are the most vibrant celebrations in the temple. Thousands of devotees visit the shrine to take part in the Saraswati Puja and Theppotsavam.

Kanaka Durga Temple is just 10 minutes drive from Vijayawada Railway Station and Bus Station. Vijayawada Airport is around 20 km from the temple. Being the third largest city of Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada is well connected with the major cities and towns by road, air and rail. Hyderabad is 275 km from the city.
