Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple Deogarh Jharkhand

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple or Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple is situated in the Santhal Parganas of Deogarh in the state of Jharkhand, India. An important pilgrim centre for the Hindus, Baidyanath Jyotirlingam is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Also known as Baba dham and Baidyanath dham, the holy place is famed for its cultural history. This is said to be the holy place where Lord Vishnu installed Lord Shiva in this form. And so the presiding deity here is known as Baidyanath Jyotirlingam.

Temple Structure

Baba Baidyanath Temple complex comprises the main temple of Baba Baidyanath, where the Jyotir Linga is installed, and 21 other temples. Facing east, the temple is a plain stone structure with a pyramidal tower. The tower rises from a square base to a height of 72 feet from the ground. A large container is found to the east of the northern verandah of the temple, into which the water and milk offered as ablution are poured. The lingam propels from the centre of a large slab of basalt. The surface of the lingam is imbalanced and its top is broken. Devotees can see various porches in the temple. There is one porch which leads to the room where the lingam is fixed. In the front is the second porch with a row of pillars and on its right side is the image of a bull made of sandstone. A holy pond known as Shivaganga is found in the north of the temple. Next to it is another old pond called Mansinghi, made during 16th century.

Sravan Mela

About 105 km from Baidyanath Dham is the Sultanganj where Ganga flows in north direction. From here, people carry the holy Ganga water and go up to Deoghar on foot and then worship Lord Shiva. This pilgrimage prolongs during the whole month of Sravan for 30 days. This religious fair is considered as the longest fair of the world. Pilgrims wear saffron color dresses and it looks like a human chain of 105 km.

Temple Timings

The temple is opened at 4 am to 3.30 pm and from 6 pm to 9 pm. Timings are extended on religious occasions.

Festivals

Three important fairs, namely, Basant-Panchami Mela in January, Maha Shivratri Mela in March and the Bhadra Purnima Mela in September are important here. Maha Shivratri Mela is considered auspicious, attracting a large number of devotees.

How to Reach

Nearby airports are at Ranchi, Gaya, Patna and Kolkata.  Babadham is located in north-eastern Jharkhand, four miles from Jasidih Railway Station. A small railway branch line connects Jasidih to Baidyanath Dham railway station.

Devotees coming from Kolkata or other parts of West Bengal can take the route via Jamtara. Buses run regularly from various places of Jharkhand and Bihar to Deogarh.
