Kottukal Cave Temple Kollam

Kottukal Cave Temple in Kollam is situated in the village named Kottukkal, near Anchal in Kerala. The shrine is also known as Kottukkal Kal Thrikovil Cave Temple in Malayalam. The cave temple is a living example of rock cut architecture built between 6th and 8th centuries CE. The shrine features two caves of unequal size facing east. An idol of Lord Ganesha can be seen in between the two caves.

The larger cave temple has an idol of Lord Shiva in Shivalinga form with a monolithic Nandi (bull) in front. The smaller cave enshrines the idol of Lord Hanuman. The temple is managed by Travancore Devaswom Board and daily pooja services are conducted.

Kottukal Cave Temple Anchal Kollam

Kottukal Cave Temple is located in the middle of a large extent of green paddy fields. Kottukkal got its name from Kottiya Kallu which literally means “carved rock”. The name Thrikovil was derived as the cave has three deities Shiva, Hanuman and Ganapathy. Historians date back the cave to 7th century AD when “Nedila Paranthaka Nedumchadayan” who ruled Chadayamangalam, constructed the rock cut temple.

Kottukal Cave Temple is 45 km from Kollam and 65 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Anchal is 8 km away. Jadayu Para in Chadayamangalam is a popular tourist attraction located just 10 km away.
