Satyabhama’s role in the killing of Narakasura

The present day Assam was known by the name Pragjothishya during Krishna’s time and a Danava tyrant Narakasura captured and ruled the place. After devoting several years in penance, he managed to satisfy Lord Brahma and was given a boon that no one, other than his mother, would be able to kill him. The tyrant grew extremely powerful and ravaged and destroyed the kingdom of the Gods, abducting as many 16000 women from Indra’s palace. When Indra took siege with Krishna and requested him to deal with the situation, Krishna besieged the city of Narakasura with the assistance of his vahana Garuda and Satyabhama. The fierce battle between Krishna and the demon reached its peak when Krishna got mildly hurt by the demon’s attacks. This made Satyabhama furious and launched counter attacks on the demon. She was the incarnation of Bhoomi goddess, the mother of Narakasura, it is she and Krishna who joined hands and combated the demon to death, freeing the 16, 000 women, whom Krishna later married to save them from being disgraced by society.
