Sankaranarayana Swamy Temple Navaikulam Kerala

Sree Sankara Narayana Swamy Temple in Navaikulam is one of the ancient temples in Kerala, located about 45 km north for Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shankaranarayana or Harihara – a combined deity form of half Shiva and half Vishnu. The temple enshrines a standing idol of the deity, whose right side representing Lord Shiva (Shankara) with Nandi and left side representing Lord Vishnu (Narayana) with Garuda.

The temple complex is built of granite and features numerous sub shrines. The temple faces east and the main sanctum is built on a circular design. Sub deities of the temple are Lord Ganapathi, Hanuman Swamy, Sree Dharma Shastha, Bhagavathi, Nagaraja and Yakshi. Daily five poojas are performed in the temple, followed by Sribali. The special vazhipadu of the temple is Thrupuli during Atta Vishesham in Thulam masam Ashtami day. Devotees offer delicious feed and perform pooja to temple elephant Devanarayanan on Vinayaka Chathurthy day.

Festival

The annual festival of the temple is on Medam month (May) starting from Uthrattathi nakshatra. The ten days festival is quite unique. Before the start of the festival there is a tradition of Urul Varavu (Sayana Pradakshinam) by devotees of 8 to 12 karas in the vicinity of the temple. Gaja pradakshinam with thitampu of Sankaranaraya on the elephant will be conducted from 2nd to 9th day.

Temple Timings

The temple opens at 4.00 AM in the morning and Nirmalya Darshanam starts at 4.30 AM. Morning darshan timings are up to 11.00 AM. Evening timings are from 5.00 PM to 8.00 PM.
