Baitala Deula Temple Architecture

The striking feature of this temple is the shape of its sanctuary tower. The semicylindrical shape of its roof is a leading example of Khakhara order of temples. The Deuḷa is oblong in shape and the Jagmohana is rectangular in structure. The outer walls of this temple are encrusted with panels of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in her Shakti form, hunting processions, capturing of wild elephants and the occasional erotic couples. Another striking feature of this temple is marked by strange and frightening carvings in the sanctum and the image enshrined in the central niche, eight-armed Chamunda, the terrifying form of Durga Maa. The tantric character of the temple is also marked by the stone post, to which sacrificial offerings were tethered, just in front of the Jagmohana. The entrance of Vaital Deul temple is decorated with a four-faced Linga with significant carvings. A beautiful image of Lord Surya, flanked by twin sisters of dawn named Usha and Pratyusha, adorn the eastern face of the tower. Image of Arjuna driving his chariot is also located at the temple.
