Birth of Goddess Padmavathi

The divine origin of Goddess Padmavathi is narrated in many Puranas. According to legend, King Akasharaja and Queen Dharanidevi, after performing a sacred yagna, discovered a beautiful girl emerging from a thousand-petalled golden lotus in the Pushkarini. She was named Padmavathi. As she grew up, Lord Venkateswara came in search of her, leading to their celestial marriage, celebrated with great devotion.

Sage Bhrigu and the Divine Penance

Another prominent legend involves Sage Bhrigu, who struck Lord Vishnu on His chest. Angered, Goddess Mahalakshmi left Vaikuntham and performed penance on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River. In the 13th year of her penance, she emerged as Sri Padmavathi from the golden lotus in the Pushkarini during the holy month of Karthika on Panchami day, under the Uttarashada Nakshatra.

Construction of the Temple

The present temple structure is believed to have been built during the reign of Tondaman Chakravarthi, who was considered the elder brother of Goddess Padmavathi.
