Sri Shyamala Shodasanama Stotram
Sri Shyamala Shodasanama Stotram (श्री श्यामला षोडशनाम स्तोत्रम्) is a sacred hymn dedicated to Goddess Sri Shyamala Devi, who is also known as Raja Shyamala and Mantrini Devi. This hymn describes sixteen divine names and attributes of the Goddess. It is found in the Lalitopakhyana section of the Brahmanda Purana.
Sri Shyamala Shodasanama Stotram was revealed by Lord Hayagriva, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who is worshipped as the bestower of knowledge and wisdom. Lord Hayagriva is also associated with several sacred hymns dedicated to Goddess Sri Lalita Tripura Sundari, including the famous Sri Lalita Sahasranama Stotram.
The hymn is set against the background of the divine battle between Goddess Sri Lalita Tripura Sundari and the demon Bhandasura. During this battle, Goddess Sri Shyamala Devi joins Goddess Sri Varahi Devi to fight against Bhandasura and his mighty army. The celestial beings, witnessing the divine appearance and valour of Goddess Shyamala, praise Her by chanting sixteen sacred names.
Goddess Shyamala is traditionally depicted with a dark or greenish complexion, holding the Veena and symbolising divine knowledge, music, wisdom and creative expression. She is regarded as the chief minister and an important divine power in the court of Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari.
The battle against Bhandasura also carries a deeper spiritual meaning. Bhandasura represents ignorance, negative tendencies, attachments and the accumulated effects of karma. The divine battle symbolises the inner struggle of human beings to overcome these limitations and attain spiritual wisdom.
In Sri Vidya tradition, Goddess Bala helps devotees develop purity and innocence, while Goddess Varahi provides the courage and strength to overcome ignorance and attachments. Goddess Shyamala guides devotees through knowledge, speech, music, creativity and divine wisdom. Through Her grace, devotees progress towards the ultimate realisation of Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, the Supreme Divine Consciousness.
