Sabarimala Mandalakalam Pilgrimage Season

Sabarimala Mandalakalam begins on the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam. Sabarimala Mandala Kalam is the main pilgrimage season to the world famous Swamy Ayyappan Temple dedicated to Lord Swamy Ayyappa in Pattanamthitta District of Kerala. Lord Ayyappa devotees consider Sabarimala Mandalam pilgrimage season to be very auspicious and take great vrata before visiting the Sannidhanam. It is believed that first time Sabarimala pilgrim had to take 41 days vrata before visiting the shrine. Sabarimala pilgrims usually wear black or brown dhotis and carry Irumudi or Kettunira - a cloth bundle divided into two parts, which carries holy coconut with ghee for offering Sabarimala Sree Dharmasasta. Female devotees between the age group of 10 to 50 years are restricted from climbing Sabarimala Hill to visit Swamy Ayyappa Temple.
