Urmila wife of Lakshmana Ramayana

Urmila is the wife of Lakshmana, the brother of Lord Rama. She is one of important characters in Hindu epic Ramayana. Urmila (sometimes spelled as Oormila) was the daughter of King Janaka Maharaj of Mithila and queen Sunayana or Sunaina. She was the younger sister of Seetha Devi, the wife of Sri Ram. Angad and Dharmaketu (Chandraketu or Chitraketu) are the two sons of Urmila and Lakshmana.

Urmila wife of Lakshmana Ramayana

In the epic Ramayana, Urmila lived here life as a “Dharampatni” by helping her husband tread the path of righteousness. When Lakshman was about to accompany Lord Rama to forest, Urmila asked him to take her with him. But Laxman told her he cannot take her as he will be going there to serve Ram and Sita. Urmila stayed back as she wanted her husband not to be distracted from his service. She lived a ‘Vanaprastha’ life for 14 years until Lakshmana returned.

Urmila is regarded as one of the forgotten heroines of Indian literature by Rabindranath Tagore. In Saket, Hindi poet Maithili Sharan Gupt’s version of the Ramayana, Urmila was portrayed as the central character.
