Poonthanam Day festival at Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple, Kerala is on 27th February 2012. Poonthanam day is celebrated annually in memory of Saint Poonthanam on the Aswathi nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February – March). Poonthanam Namboodiri (AD 1547-1640) was a great devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan (Krishna), the presiding deity of Guruvayoor Temple. Poonthanam is well known for his evergreen poetic composition Njanappaana (Jnanapana or Jnana Pana), which some people even regarded as the “Bhagavad Gita of Malayalam”.
Poonthanam Day is celebrated at Guruvayoor Temple by reciting the philosophical works of Poonthanam. Poonthanam Illam holds a one week literary festival in commemoration of Poonthanam Namboodiri.
Apart from Jnanapana, Anandakarnamritham (dance of ecstasy) and Bahsakarnamritham (a Hindu devotional work) are other famous works of Poonthanam Namboodiri.
