Vinayaka Popular Name of Lord Ganesha

Lord Vinayaka is one of the most common names of Lord Ganesh. Also spelled Vinayagar (mostly in Tamil), Vinayaka is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Vinayaka is an important name of Ganesha that appears in Hindu Puranas and Buddhist Tantras. The literally meaning of the name Vinayaka is the “One who removes all Obstacles”. The name Vinayagar refers to the main role of the Lord in Hindu legends as the master and removers of all “Vighna” or obstacles.

The name Vinayaka can also be seen reflected in the naming of the eight famous Lord Ganesh Temples in Maharashtra – the Ashtavinayak Temples. The ancient rock cut Karpaga Vinayakar Temple in Pillayarpatti Tamil Nadu, Swetha Vinayagar Temple and Sree Manakula Vinayagar Temple are some other popular temples like this.

Vinayagar Agaval, written by Tamil Poetess Avaiyar of Chola Era, is a beautiful hymn in praise of Vinayaka. This wonderful devotional song has 72 lines and depicts the various facts and facets of human life as being taught by Hindu God Ganesh.

Vinayaka Chaturti, the main festival of Lord Ganesh, is also named after the God.
