Goddess Malikapurathamma Sabarimala Temple

Malikapurathamma is the Hindu Goddess worshiped as the upaprathista (subsidiary deity) at Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple. The temple of Malikapurathamma is visited by Sabarimala devotees after worshiping Ayyappan.  According to Tantric views, pilgrims have to worship Goddess Malikappuram as Adiparasakthi. The main offerings to Goddess Malikapurathu Amma are Saffron powder, (Kumkumam podi), Manjal podi (Turmeric powder), Coconut, Plantain (Kadali Pazham), Jhagri (Sharkara), red silk and Honey. It should be noted that at Malikappuram Temple, the coconuts are offered only after rolling them on the ground.

According to legends, Malikapurathamma is the buffalo-headed demoness Mahishi who got shapa moksha (reprieve from curse) from Lord Ayyappa. Goddess Malikapurathamma is worshiped as the eternal consort-in-waiting of Ayyappan. Malikappuram wished to marry Ayyappa, but Ayyappa told her that he is a Brahmachari. The lord asked her to reside near Sannidhanam and he will marry her when no first timer (Kanni Ayyappa) visits Sabarimala Ayyappa temple.
