Adi Shankara Jayanti 2017 celebrates the birthday of the great philosopher and saint, Shankaracharya. The day is observed on the 5th day of Vaisakha month (April – May) during the waxing phase of the moon. This year, Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti 2017 is on April 30.

Shankara Bhagavatpada was born on Kaladi in Kerala, India. The greatest saint of all times, Adi Shankara is believed to an incarnation of Lord Shiva by many people. Though the birth date of Shankara differs in various texts, the most accepted dating places Adi Shankara to be a scholar from the first half of the 8th century CE. It is believed that Adi Shankara attained Samadhi at the age of 32 in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand.

Adi Shankara consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. Brahmasutrabhasya is regarded as the masterpiece work of Adi Shankara. It is a commentary on Brahma Sutra and is considered as fundamental text of the Vedanta school of Hinduism. Govinda Bhagavatpada is regarded as the guru of Shankaracharya.

Adi Shankara Jayanti is observed as Philosopher’s Day the teachings of his principles are conducted by several Hindu organizations.
