Nachiyar Kovil Thirunaraiyur Nambi Temple Kumbakonam

Nachiyar Kovil or Thirunaraiyur Nambi Temple is a famous Perumal temple located at Thirunarayur in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. The presiding deities worshipped here is Lord Vishnu in the form of Narayur Nambi or Srinivasa Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Vanchulavalli Thaayaar or Neela Devi Nachiyar. Both the deities are housed in the main sanctum. This temple is constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture. The sanctum also houses the images of Brahma, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and a set of gods, who are depicted attending the wedding. The festive idols of Srinivasa, Sridevi, Vanjulavalli and Bhudevi are housed in the same shrine. A granite wall surroundings the temple encloses all its shrines. The temple also comprises 5-tiered rajagopuram.Six daily rituals and four yearly festivals are held at the temple.

Nachiyar Temple is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Mahavishnu. The temple is the place where Lord Vishnu is believed to have initiated Pancha Samskara to Thirumangai Azhwar. The Kal Garuda image in this temple is another attraction. The Kal Garuda image in the temple used during the festive occasions is believed to increase in weight seeking 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 people in succession when the procession comes out of various gates from the sanctum to the main entrance of the temple.

Thirunaraiyur Nambi Temple Important Festivals


Brahmotsavam is the major festival celebrated for 10 days during the month of December–January. The Garuda Sevai is celebrated during the month of March–April. During both these festivals, the festive images of Kal Garuda are taken out around the streets of the temple. Vasanthothsavam or spring festival is celebrated during the month of May–June. The Thirukalyana Utsavam or the wedding festival is celebrated in the 100-pillared hall during the month of September–October.
