Mahalingeswaraswamy Temple in Thiruvidaimarudur, Tamil Nadu, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It holds great significance for the Saivism sect of Hinduism as one of the seven major Shiva temples. Shiva is worshipped as Mahalingeswaraswamy, with his idol known as Jyothirmayalingam.

Mahalingeswarar Temple, Thiruvidaimarudur houses the lingam, which is believed to be the focal point for the seven consorts of Shiva. The presiding deity is highly revered in the Tevaram, a Tamil Saiva canonical work from the 7th century. The temple has also been praised by the 9th century Saiva saint poet Manikkavacakar in his works. The shrine has been visited multiple times by the revered saint Pattinattar.

There are a total of 149 inscriptions linked to the temple, showcasing the contributions made by the Pandyas, Cholas, Thanjavur Nayaks, and Thanjavur Maratha kingdom. The Chola dynasty constructed the oldest sections of the current masonry structure in the 9th century. Subsequent expansions, such as the impressive gopuram gatehouses, are credited to later periods, including the Thanjavur Nayaks in the 16th century.

The state boasts one of the largest temple complexes, which is home to four gopurams, or gateway towers. Within the complex, you will find numerous shrines, with the most prominent ones dedicated to Mahalingeswaraswamy, Bruhatsundarakuchaambika, and Mookambigai (or Devi Mookambika). Additionally, the temple complex features multiple halls and three precincts, with the second precinct being particularly noteworthy for its Vijayanagar period sculptures. The temple follows a schedule of six daily rituals, starting from 5:30 a.m. and concluding at 10 p.m., as well as twelve annual festivals.
