Pallichal Dikku Bali Mahotsavam is a spiritually significant ritual festival conducted in connection with the renowned Kaliyoot Mahotsavam of Vellayani Devi Temple, Thiruvananthapuram. Held once every three years, Kaliyoot is among the most powerful and traditional ritualistic festivals dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali in Kerala. As part of this sacred tradition, Pallichal Dikku Bali holds immense historical, cultural, and devotional importance.

In 2026, the Pallichal Dikku Bali Mahotsavam will be celebrated with grandeur on 15th, 16th, and 17th February 2026 (Kumbham 3, 4, and 5 – Malayalam Era 1201). The festival committee joyfully informs all devotees that the celebrations will be conducted with enhanced spiritual fervor, rituals, and cultural programs, continuing the legacy passed down through generations.

Historical Significance: Vellayani Amma and Mavarathala Veedu

According to sacred tradition, the origin of Pallichal Dikku Bali is deeply connected with the divine power of Vellayani Amma (Goddess Kali). Once, the Maharaja ordered all sacred crowns (Thirumudi) of the land to be brought to the royal capital, Padmanabhapuram. When the Vellayani Thirumudi was brought there, other Thirumudis miraculously rose in reverence, recognizing its supreme power.

Fearing this divine strength, the Maharaja confined only the Vellayani Thirumudi inside the sanctum and ordered the priest Kelan Kulasekhara Vaathi to return. Following divine instructions received in a dream, the priest retrieved the Thirumudi and began his return journey. At dawn, he reached Pallichal and sought pooja offerings from a household, which was denied. He then arrived at Mavarathala Veedu, where an elderly woman offered rice, fruits, tender coconut, and all necessary offerings with pure devotion. Miraculously, nature itself cooperated to fulfill the pooja needs.

From that blessed day onwards, during Kaliyoot Mahotsavam, after Dikku Bali ezhunnallathu, the Goddess first arrives at Mavarathala Veedu, where poojas are still performed by the descendants of that household. This tradition continues to this day, blessing the people of Pallichal with divine grace.
