“Om Namah Shivaya” echoes with devotion at the sacred Kunnath Mahadeva Temple, located at Chengannur, functioning under the Travancore Devaswom Board. This temple holds exceptional spiritual importance as it is regarded as the Moolasthanam (original sacred seat) of Chengannur Mahadevar Temple, making it a revered centre of Shaiva worship in Kerala.

The temple will observe the Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam in February 2026, from 04 February to 15 February 2026 (Makaram 21, Wednesday to Kumbham 02, Sunday – Malayalam Era 1201). This extended festival period is marked by intense spiritual practices, sacred rituals, and devotional programmes dedicated to Lord Mahadeva.

Maha Shivaratri is one of the most significant observances in the Hindu calendar, symbolizing spiritual awakening, inner purification, and divine grace. During the Mahotsavam, devotees gather in large numbers to participate in special poojas, abhishekams, and prayers, observing fasting and night-long worship as an expression of devotion to Lord Shiva.

A major highlight of the festival is the Yajnam, conducted with strict adherence to Vedic traditions. The sacred rituals are led by a distinguished team of scholars and artists. The Yajnacharyan is Kavalam Ratheesh Chandran, supported by Upacharyans Parimanam Babu and Panmana Raju. The rhythmic spiritual ambience of the Yajnam is enhanced by Tabala accompaniment by Parimanam Biju, while the role of Yajna Hothavu is performed by Govindan Namboothiri from Kannur.

The combination of Vedic chanting, disciplined ritual procedures, and devotional music creates a deeply elevating spiritual environment within the temple premises. Each day of the Mahotsavam offers devotees an opportunity to connect with Lord Shiva through prayer, reflection, and sacred participation.

The Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam at Kunnath Mahadeva Temple, Chengannur, stands as a powerful blend of tradition, devotion, and spiritual heritage. Devotees are warmly invited to attend the festival, take part in the sacred rituals, and receive the blessings of Lord Mahadeva for peace, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment.
