Karikkakom Devi Temple or Karikkakom Chamundi Devi Temple is a famous Goddess Temple in Trivadrum, Kerala. This ancient temple, more than 600 years old, is situated at Karikkakom, around 7 km north of Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The temple enshrines a Panchaloha idol (traditional five-metal alloys) of Goddess Karikakathamma – an incarnation of Goddess Parvati Devi. Temple Details 

Karikkakom Chamundi Devi Temple lies on the midst of evergreen scenery surrounded on all sides by coconut palms and other lush green plants. The main Sreekovil enshrines Goddess Chamundeswari. The temple also has separate shrines of Goddess Raktha Chamundi, Goddess Bala Chamundi, Sree Dharmashasta, Lord Maha Ganapathy, Bhuvaneswari, Ayiravalli (Mountain Goddess), Nagaraja, Yakshi, and Yogiswaran (Yogeeswaran). There is no idol in the Raktha Chamundi Nada (shrine) - a wall painting of Devi in Rowdra Bhava (ferocious state) can be seen on the wall of the Nada. Devotees regardless of caste, creed and race are allowed to enter the temple.

Karikkakom Temple Festivals

The annual Temple festival is celebrated on the Malayalam month of Meenam, starting on the Makam day. This festival is known as Ulsava Mahamaham.

Karikkakom Pongala

Pongala is a main festival celebrated at Karikkakom Devi Temple. The Makam nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Meenam is regarded as the star of Goddess Chamundi Devi. Devotees from all over Trivandrum district and the nearby districts visit the temple to offer Pongala (Rice Pudding cooked in traditional earthen pots) to the Goddess.

Other popular festivals and rituals celebrated at the temple include Kodi Charthu, Karthika Thaneerkuda (on the Karthika Deepam day), Nirayum Puthiriyum, Vinayaka Chaturthi Pooja, Ayilyam Ootu (poojs for the ‘Nagas’ or serpent gods on the ‘Ayilyam’ day in the month of Makaram), Bali Sadhya, Karthika Vilakku, Vishu Festival (Vishukani – on the first day of Medam masam), and Uthrada Taneerkuda (on the Malayalam month of Chingam).

Temple Opening Timings

Karikkakom Chamundi Devi Temple is open on all days. The temple opens daily at 05:00 AM to 11:30 AM in the morning and 5:00 PM to 08:00 PM in the evening.

Temple Offerings

The main offering which is said to be the favourite of Goddess Chamundi is Kadum payasam. Other main temple offerings include Palpayasam, Panchamrta Abhishekam, Sari Charthu, Pidippanam Viral, Pournami Puja, Rakta Pushparchana, and Thakidu Pooja. It is believed that conducting Raktapushparchana for 13 consecutive Fridays will help to remove all types of doshas and improve well being.
