Velakali at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Thiruvananthapuram

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Thiruvananthapuram will be conducting Velakali as part of the annual Painguni Festival 2011 which is being celebrated currently at the temple. Velakali will be held today, on 14th April 2011, at the Kizhakke Nada (East Entrance) at 4.00 PM in the evening. Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is conducting the Velakali after many decades and around 101 performers will take part in today’s performance.

What is Velakali ritual?

Velakali is a traditional ritual art form of Kerala which is mainly performed in front of temple courtyard during the festival occasion. The ritual starts with the temple deity taken out in an elephant procession. The performers dressed up like traditional soldiers with colourful headgear and shining swords will engage in vigorous movements dexterous sword play. The full event will be accompanied with orchestra consisting of Kombu, Kuzhal, Maddalam, and Ilathalam.
