Legend of Mumba Devi Temple

There is a legend behind the Mumba Devi temple. Once there was a cruel demon called Mumbarka in that region. His enjoyment was to harass people. The residents of the city then presented this matter in front of Lord Brahma who created an eight armed Goddess with an intention to protect them. The Goddess defeated the demon and rescued the natives. Since the goddess protected them from Mumbarka, she came to know by the name Mumba Devi. Her devotees then constructed a temple on behalf of her in 1675at Bori Bunder. This was destroyed later and reconstructed the present temple at Bhuleshwar. In early years, Koli fishermen in Mumbai were the worshippers of the Goddess. As per belief, devotion to Mumba Devi would never be a disappointment.
