Gudi Padwa Festival marks the beginning of the New Year according to the traditional Marathi Hindu calendar followed in Maharashtra. The day is a major festival and falls on the first day of the Chaitra month, which is the first month in Hindu Marathi calendar. The word “Gudi” is a Marathi translation of the Hindu month “Chaitra” and the word “Padwa” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Pratipada” which means “First”. Gudi Padva is also known as Samvatsar Padvo. In 2021, the date of Gudi Padwa is 13 April 2021, Tuesday.
On Gudi Padwa, a Gudhi or victory flag is hoisted on the right side of the main entrance in traditional Maharashtrian households.
