Basant Panchami Festival 2022 February 5

Basant Panchami is an important North Indian Hindu Festival celebrated on the 5th day of Magh month (January – February). Vasant Panchami festival is also referred to as Saraswati Puja or Shree Panchami. Basant or Vasant literally means spring and the festival marks the arrival of spring season. Hindus worship Goddess Saraswati on the day and special poojas are performed to enlighten with knowledge and get rid of ignorance. This year, Basant Panchami date is on 5 February 2022.

Traditionally, Basant Panchami is regarded as the day of the beginning of life and the arrival of happiness. Spring season is the season of rebirth and bloom. It is in this season fields of crops and fruits starts ripening giving a yellow coat to nature. Hence great importance is given to yellow colour during Vasant Panchami festival. People are seen dressed in yellow garments.

Children are taught to write their first words on Basant Panchami day. Another important event is the kite flying competitions organized on the day. Some communities pay homage to the ancestors on the day and Pitru Tarpan is performed.
