Lalitgiri Buddhist Pilgrimage Orissa

Lalitgiri in Orissa is a famous Buddhist complex consisting of major stupas and monasteries. Lalitgiri is located about 55 km northeast to Cuttack and assumed to be the primitive sandstone hill which highlighted the presence of Buddhism in Orissa state. This is one of the popular triangular hills and the other two of this category are Udayagiri and Ratnagiri. These three hills represent the Buddhist culture and tradition which were strongly prevalent during first century AD. With respect to the excavation conducted at Lalitgiri, it has been found that there were one beautiful monastery with spectacular carvings, a temple with marvelous arches and a well structured pillar (Sthupa). Other important collections had from this location include articles of gold and silver, stone container, and Bhrami scripts. These are also indications of the cultural heritage of Kushana dynasty who ruled the country during that period.

The idol of Buddha which collected from this location is very unique in appearance with tight lips, long ears and wide forehead. At Lalitgiri there is one museum where the collections of the remains are displayed attractively. They include huge Mahayana sculptures, idols of Buddha and Bodhisattva statues. All these materials are properly mentioned for the awareness of the visitors. The structural designs viewed from here resemble the same done by the architectural schools at Gandhar and Mathura. There are also leftovers representing the Buddhist constructions like colossal pillars, platforms, resting rooms, devotional hall, kitchen with store rooms, earthenware, tiles, bricks, iron objects, and coins.

The ideal time to visit Lalitgiri is in between October and March. During this occasion the climate is very pleasant here.
