Mount Kailash, at an altitude of 6,740 m, is situated to the north of the Himalayan border in Tibet. Considered as the physical embodiment of the legendary Mt. Meru, this peak is a sacred place for five religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Ayyavazhi and the Bon faith. The mount is the source of the longest rivers in Asia: the Indus River, the Sutlej River, the Brahmaputra River, and the Karnali River. The word “Kailasa” means “crystal” in Sanskrit language.

Kailash Pilgrimage

Thousands of devotees make a pilgrimage to Kailash every year and they believe that circumambulating Mount Kailash on foot is a holy ritual for a good fortune. Hindus and Buddhists circumambulate the mountain in a clockwise direction and followers of the Jain and Bönpo religions in a counter clockwise direction.

On the south of   Mount Kailash are Rakhastal, Mansarovar, and further south are the peaks of Gurla Mandhata (7683 m). On climbing the mount, pilgrims come across some important peaks such as Ravana Parvat, Hanuman Parvat, Padmasambhava, Manjusri, Vajradhara, Avalokiteswara, Jambeyang, Shavari and Norseng. During the Parikrama, devotees can have a beautiful view of Mansarovar and Ravana Tel from the south west point of Kailash.
