Shravanabelagola Tourist Attractions

Shravanabelagola is one of the important Jain pilgrim center located 13 km to the south east of Channarayapatna of Hassan district in Karnataka, India. Shravanabelagola is famous for the 57 feet tall monolithic statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali. Sravana Belagola is 158 km from Bangalore, 83 km from Mysore and is located in the middle of two hills. The term “Shravanabelagola” means the place of white pond where the Jain ascetics live.

The Statue

The 57 feet tall Gomateshwara statue is precisely at the Vindyagiri Hill and is considered to be the world’s largest monolithic statue. It is believed to have been erected by Chavundaraya for his mother and there are inscriptions in Kannada, Tamil and Marathi. The statue stands facing the north and is nude. The image is magnificently carved and though it is gigantic in figure, it looks majestic.

History

Shravanabelagola has got some historical importance which adds to its popularity. The temple has got some about more than eight hundred inscriptions. There are inscriptions which refer to the reign of Chandragupta Maurya and it is said that the pupil of Chandragupta Maurya meditated there. It is believed that numerous monks are supposed to have meditated in the fifth century AD.
