Ramayana Masam is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, which usually falls from mid July to mid August. The whole month of Karkitakam is observed as Ramayana Month. The great Hindu Epic Ramayanam is read in all traditional houses. Daily annadanam, devotional speeches, Ramayana Parayanam, and discourses are organized by Hindu organizations and temples.
Adhyathma Ramayanam Kilippattu written by Thunchath Ezhuthachan is the most commonly recited Version of the Ramayana in Kerala. It is believed that the tradition of reciting Ramayana started from 16th century. The reading of Ramayanam starts on the first day of Karkidakam month and the whole epic is completely read by the last day of the month.
