The 16 days Mahalakshmi Vrata in North India is observed from the 8th day of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad Month according to traditional North Indian Hindu calendar. The vrata ends on the 8th day of the Krishna Paksha of Aswhin month. Mahalaxmi vrata and Puja is an important observance dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. In 2021, the sixteen days Mahalakshmi Vrat is from 13 September  to 28 September 2021.

Mahalakshmi Vrata is mainly observed for attaining peace and prosperity. It is also believed that taking the vrata will help to get all the lost materials and wealth. Devotees worship a Kalash or Purna Kumbha symbolizing Goddess Lakshmi on the concluding day of the vrata.

According to puranas the significance of Mahalakshmi Vrata was explained by Sree Krishna to Yudhisthira. Once Yudhisthira asked Lord Krishna how he can obtain all his lost property and wealth. Sri Krishna instructed Yudhisthira to take the 16 days Mahalakshmi Vrata for this. Bhavishya Purana also explains the greatness of Maha Lakshmi Vrata.
