Dwajarohanam at Tirupati Venkateswara Temple is conducted on the first day of Tirupati Brahmotsavam Festival celebrations. Dwajarohanam is the flag hoisting festival which marks the beginning of the celebrations. A flag (Garudadhwaja) which has an emblem of Garuda is hoisted near the Srivari Alaya Dwajasthambam in front of the sanctum santorum. Dwajarohanam is regarded as a formal invitation to all the deities to attend the Brahmotsavam festival. It is also believed that Garuda who resides on the summit will oversee all the festival activities and prevent any calamities during the Brahmotsavam Festival.
Pedda Seshavahana
Commemorating this, the Lord is taken in procession on Pedda Seshavahana around the four streets of the main temple. The word Sesha is ‘to serve’ and Adi Sesha is a thousand-headed serpent, on whom Lord Vishnu rests. The Lord is carried in procession on the Seshavahana during the first two days of Brahmotsavam (Pedda Seshavahana and Chinna Seshavahana).
