Go Puja or worship of cows is the most important event during Gopashtami festival. It is believed that this is the day when Sree Krishna became an independent cowherd. He also got the title of “Govinda” (king of cows) on this day. According to Hindu Puranas, it is on Gowardhan Puja day Lord Krishna lifted the Gowardhan hill on his smaller finger to save the people of Braj from the rage of Indra.

People clean the Goshala (cowshed) and bathe the cows and their calf. They are given special food. The cows and calves are beautifully decorated and worshiped. Gopaashtami is much similar to Govatsa Dwadashi festival celebrated in Maharashtra.
